“If it doesn’t make you feel anything and heal you when you see it, it has no purpose.”
Today I’m proud to present you the beginning of a series of interviews that will be posted on my blog every Wednesday. The idea is to open this space to creative people who inspire me, the goal is that you will get to know their work and their ideas.
This first one is really special because I interviewed my husband who is an amazing artist. Ever since I met him I’ve been inspired by his passion and struggle to be a better person and artist.
Daniel Santiesteban is a tattoo artist based in Austin, TX and this is him:
What role does the artist have in society?
To provoke feelings and heal through those feelings, if that is not accomplished is not art.
What is important to you?
My family first of all, my physical and mental health, and keep learning.
What jobs have you done other than being an artist?
All of them hahaha
Some construction, I used to install security and sound systems, and also installed sound systems for concerts.
How did you find your passion?
By remembering what I used to like as a kid
How do you overcome your fears?
I found this medicine called Ayahuasca.
What inspires you today?
What is art for you?
It’s the way humans can express themselves and be free.
What do you dislike about the art world?
Who is your favorite artist?
Leonardo DaVinci. This is a fucking hard question because I have a lot in different art fields hahaha
Who is your ideal client?
Those with open mind and open heart.
Where did you grow up and how did that shape you as a creative person?
I grew up in Cd. Juarez Mexico which is a shit hole, I was surrounded by violence and mediocre mindset and that made me questioned everything. I always knew my life will be driven by creativity and moving to another country has given me that opportunity.
What is your ideology as an artist?
If it doesn’t make you feel anything and heal you when you see it, it has no purpose.
How did creativity change your life?
The process of creating something helped me to be more spiritual and more connected with my own feelings, it heals me.
How do you describe your style?
I’m in the process of finding and defining a style. It will be focused on nature and spirituality.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
The best advice I received recently was to drink Ayahuasca.
Professionally, what’s your goal?
My goal is to find a style and that people will identify with it.
What do you want people to know about you?
That I’m always looking to improve and do well on others, if you misunderstand it’s on you.
